Susie Bright’s Fairy Tale Reviews
Susie Bright has a great review of a new book out, one of a type, which chronicles one woman’s self-conscious book-deal-inspired journey to become more orgasmic. The woman in question is Mara Altman (she of the notorious Valentine’s Day Village Voice Writing Massacre). The book sounds like a bit of a bore. Bright points out that one of the book’s saving graces is that Altman interviews “almost every single living expert in female orgasm” but it’s hard to imagine that Altman stretched herself much past the usual psycho-physiological suspects. All people well worth quoting, but nothing you haven’t read in one of Altman’s articles or any other article about female orgasm in the past five years.
I suspect this might be a case of the trailer being better than the movie. Susie’s review is not only hilarious (you can always count on her to reference neuroscientists, the publishing industry and genitalia all in one line) but she does a great job of challenging the premise of the book without being too mean spirited or bitter. She uses the book to comment on the sad state not only of sex book publishing but also of the potentially stalled sexual emancipation of at least some young women.
